Many foreign workers in Korea are not covered by the national health insurance system. If you're worried about medical expenses in case of sudden illness or injury, make sure to check the Korean government's new healthcare support program starting in 2025 on the official website.
1. Who is eligible for support?
- Foreign workers with non-professional employment visas (such as E-9)
- Children of foreign workers (under 18 years old)
- Spouses who are currently pregnant
- Marriage migrants and their children who have not yet acquired Korean nationality
- Asylum seekers and their children
Note: If you are already enrolled in the National Health Insurance, you are not eligible for this program.
2. What kind of treatment is covered?
Hospitalization and surgery:
- 90% of the medical costs are covered
- You pay only 10% out-of-pocket
- Up to KRW 3 million per incident, and KRW 6 million per year
Outpatient care is generally not covered, except in the following cases:
- Prenatal and delivery care for pregnant women
- Outpatient care for children under 18
- Emergency treatment when urgent care is needed
Note: Chronic illnesses are not covered in principle, but support may be available if the condition suddenly worsens.
3. How do you apply?
- Visit a designated hospital and get a consultation
- Submit the required documents:
- Alien Registration Card
- Proof of employment or a personal statement
- Family relationship documents (if applying for a child or spouse)
- After treatment, the hospital will claim 90% of the cost from the government
- You only need to pay the remaining 10%
4. Where can you receive treatment?
- Public hospitals such as the National Medical Center, regional medical centers, and Red Cross hospitals
- Other designated hospitals by region (you can check with the local public health center or city welfare office)
